This site has a few great features and the ability to donate online alone makes it worthwhile.

But, the usability here is not very good. Authentication is too complicated. I can't even figure out where to change my password. Just now it took me quite some time to figure out how to accept a friend invitation. Things just aren't in the right place.

My recommendation is that this website should be rebuilt using Ning. It won't take very long and the end result will be much more fun and easier to use than this enterprise stuff. They've put a lot of thought into building easy to use message boards, picture uploading, profiles, event calendars, etc. Oh, and it's free.

If you ask them, Ning will let you customize the php code and you can use that to add in custom pieces like donations or honor roll.

I wish I had the time to do it myself, but unfortunately I don't. I can recommend a very good consulting outfit that would be up to the task though. I'm not sure how much this current system costs, but if it's at all expensive to maintain, I think moving to another platform would be the right thing to do. If we do, there will be MUCH more alumni activity on here.

I am in 100% agreement about usability on this site. It is a giant step in the right direction from our previous website(s), but there is still a lot of room for improvement.

The main issues we face with any Rockledge website are:

1) Volunteer Time:
We need to have at least one alumni volunteer take ownership of creation, maintenance and content management. After initial setup, it shouldn't require too much time, but it will require at least some time on a regular basis. We need that now, even though we are paying a company to manage our website, but it will be even more necessary if we create our own site or hire yet another vendor. And, so far, we have not been able to locate such a volunteer.

2) Database Management: The site will need to work seemlessly with whoever is managing our alumni database. In addition to the website, we get a lot of alumni updates via mail. We need to make sure website record updates are shared with the company managing our database (and newsletter mailings), and that updates received by mail are shared with our website. All of this is handled by the same company now, but will require planning and careful attention if we use our own site or hire a different company for just the website.

3) I lost my train of thought, but there are more considerations (like capability to generate monthly eLetters, custom e-mail blasts, etc., which is available through our current website's software). I'm open to discussing all options though. Especially any that take the role of web administrator off of my plate!
